  • What are genital warts?

    Genital warts are one of the most common Sexually Transmitted Diseases. It is an infection of the skin of the genital and anal area causing small flesh colored bumps. These bumps can appear alone or in large clusters.

    Genital warts are caused by certain types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV type 6 and 11 are responsible for 90% of genital warts cases. Genital warts are spread via skin to skin contact during oral, genital, or anal sex with a partner who is infected.


    How common is genital warts?

    At least half of all sexually active people will become infected with the virus that causes genital warts at some point during their lives.


    How do people get genital warts?

    The Human Papilloma Virus that causes genital warts is spread by skin to skin contact during oral, genital or anal sex with a partner who is infected.


    What are the signs and symptoms?

    Genital warts can be flat or raised - gray, red or flesh-colored growths. They can also take on a larger cauliflower like shape. Genital warts can appear as one wart or as a cluster of warts. They appear in or around the genital or anal region in both men and women.

    In men genital warts can appear on: the tip or shaft of the penis, the scrotum or the anus.

    In women genital warts can appear on: the vulva, inside or around the vagina, the cervix or the anus.


    What are the treatments for genital warts?

    There are several options for treating genital warts including:

    • Laser Therapy
    • Freezing
    • Applying Chemicals
    • Prescription Treatments
    • Surgical Removal
