Why Should I get tested for Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea (a.k.a. “The Clap”) is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhea, usually acquired through sexual contact or intercourse. Symptoms of white, yellow, or green discharge, burning sensation when urinating, soreness, bleeding, or painful bowel movements, may appear 2 to 5 days after infection, occasionally it takes as long as 30 days to appear.
In men, it can cause epididymitis, a painful condition of the ducts attached to the testicles that may lead to infertility if left untreated. In women, gonorrhea commonly leads to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), which can lead to internal abscesses (pus-filled “pockets” that are hard to cure), chronic pelvic pain which may cause infertility or increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Untreated, it can spread to the blood or joints and can be life threatening, and easily increases the risk of contracting HIV.
How do I get tested for Gonorrhea?
There are many ways for testing gonorrhea, either by Gram Stain where a sample is gathered from the urethra or cervix which allows the doctor to see the bacteria under a microscope, or a urine sample that is then sent to a lab for testing.
Another method for testing gonorrhea is by collecting a swab sample from the part of the body that is likely to be infected (cervix, urethra, penis, rectum, or throat) can be sent to a lab for testing.
