Why should I get tested for HIV?
An estimated 1.2 million Americans infected with the HIV. Nearly one third do not know they are infected. HIV tests will not detect antibodies until about 2 to 8 weeks after possible infection. A majority will develop antibodies in the first 3 months after possible exposure.
Early HIV antibody testing may lead to a “false negative”, which means the infection, was not detected. In some cases, it takes up to 6 months to develop detectable antibodies. For this reason, repeat testing is crucial. Getting another test 3 months after the initial test will give the best results.
How do I get tested for HIV?
The Traditional HIV screening test: which many clinics and physicians offer, is known as the EIA (enzyme immunoassay). Using blood drawn from a vein is the most common screening test used to look for antibodies. Though accurate, results can take between 2 days and 2 weeks.
The Rapid HIV screening test: produces quick results, usually in about 20 minutes. Rapid tests use blood from a vein or a finger stick to look for the presence of antibodies. There are only 4 FDA-approved Rapid tests for HIV.
