Why should I get tested for Syphilis?
Syphilis (a.k.a. “the great imitator”, “the great imposter” and “the pox”), is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Generally common in persons 20 to 39 years of age, syphilis is transmitted through direct contact with a syphilis sore, typically through sexual intercourse.
Initially, syphilis will look like a firm, round, small and painless sore called chancre. If not treated, these may progress and develop into a rough, red or reddish brown skin rash and mucous membrane lesions. Subsequently, syphilis may damage the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, liver, bones, and joints. The genital sores caused by syphilis also increase the risk of HIV infection. If not treated, damages caused by the infection may be serious enough to cause death.
How do I get tested for Syphilis?
Syphilis can be tested by examining material from a chancre (infectious sore) using a special microscope. A blood test screen is another way to screen for syphilis. We recommend this for any individual who believes they are at risk for contracting syphilis.
