Why Should I get tested for Trichomonas?
Trichomonas (a.k.a. “Trich” or Trichomonas) is the most common and commonly ignored sexually transmitted disease (STD) that infects approximately 7.4 million people in the U.S. The single-cell parasite called Trichomonas Vaginalis, affects sexually active individuals of all ages. Symptoms of vaginal discharge, genital itching and pain when urinating are most common to women. Most infected men do not show symptoms, although when present, they usually have discharge from the urethra, the urge to urinate, and a burning sensation when urinating.
If not properly diagnosed and treated, infections may worsen and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can lead to internal abscesses (pus-filled “pockets”) in women. In men, acute infections may cause urethritis, (an inflammation of the tube that carries urine and semen through the penis) and prostatitis, (an infection and inflammation of the prostate). Trichomonas increases susceptibility to HIV, the virus causing AIDS for both men and women.
How do I get tested for Trichomonas?
Getting tested for Trichomonas requires a visit to the doctor for an exam. Effective diagnosis and treatment of Trichomonas infections have been shown to eliminate symptoms. Conventional testing procedures for Trichomonas from swabs can usually take anywhere from 24-120 hours.
